Is 'leveling' sand too heavy to grow carrots?

I picked up some of this sand from Lowes. It is the stuff you put down before everything else when you want to put a walkway down. It is kind of small, but course.

I poured about 3 cubic feet in a 28"x20"ish bucket and planted carrots about 1 inch apart. Anyone have any experience using this type of "sand", or use it for growing carrots or other root vegetables?

I have no experience with what you're trying to do, but I've found that plain sand - as you describe it - is just too solid/compact for anything I tried to grow.
The best mix with sand I've used was a 2:1 mixture of perlite and river sand, or . . . a similar mixture with woodchips and river sand.

You can just ring up the guys at AN's tech support line. The first people that answer are ordering support, just ask them to forward you to tech support and they'll do it. The tech guys know their stuff.
