 o
growing tobacco

I am new to hydroponics and would like to figure out the best way to grow tobacco plants hydroponically. They will be grown indoors in a laboratory environment, I can pipe in air, oxygen, or CO2 as needed, and light is easily controlled. I've done a little research, and it seems the first question I should ask is if the tobacco would grow better in solution culture or medium culture. If you have grown tobacco, what exactly did you do?

doesn't look like many people have tried to grow tobacco in hydro.

The reason almost no one grows hydro-tobacco is the plant size.

don't get me wrong, you *could* grow an oak tree to maturity in a well enough constructed hydroponic system but the cost/difficulty of it is preventitive from anyone accually doing this.

other than size, there is no reason you can't grow tobacco using a Bato Bucket or DWC system of some type. even Ebb&flow would be condusive to this type of growing.

good luck.

Hi --

Since the expected yield of a tobacco plant is about 3 ounces of dry product and they are 7-8 feet tall and require about 4 sq. ft. and they need FULL SUNLIGHT, growing them indoors under lights just isn't cost effective.

You can get tobacco seeds from a seed supplier by sending an e-mail to GYOtobacco@yahoo.com and he will send you a catalog.

bob kemp,

I raised a bit of tobacco when I was younger and we never had any plants get 7-8 feet tall. We planted them 18" apart with 32" rows. The decent size plant would yield 4.5-5 ounces of tobacco when stripped (Leaves pulled off plant after it cured) though it had enough moisture that it could be handled.
