anyone ever get this. only in the net pots that contain plants. the hydroton balls get a bit dark and when i rub them green residue comes off. I'm using a DWC system and the plants appear to be doing fine and the reservoir smells normal.

any ideas? will try and post a picture soon

Sounds like algae to me. Try a little H2O2 in the nutrient; that should take care of it if it's really algae.

Algae is a common occurrence. When Freeman says a little he means it. In fact, if it's not in the reservoir you can just spray a little on if you have a small spray bottle. Just don't apply half the bottle to a small reservoir. I've gotten away with a half cup in a 35 gallon rain barrel that was used to store water for my hydro. I bet I could even use less. The algae shouldn't cause too much of a problem, though.

If you want a more regular solution, try covering the hydroton. Without light the algae won't grow. In my makeshift water farms, I have used circular vinyl cutouts from leftover shower stall material (flimsy stuff, not rigid plastic) and put a slit and hole in it to get it around the stem. I've also used pie pans, but sharp edges are a huge deterrent for me. I'd go buy a sheet of stall material from the local big box store and cut out what you need. Use the rest as matting under the system if you have any left. I think the stuff is like $12 or $15 bucks for an 8x4 sheet. If algae builds up on it, you can just wipe it clean. Be sure to put the smooth side up. I've also used cut up 3 mil contractor trash bags. I had to replace them after a single cycle, though, and chose to stick with the vinyl to reduce waste (not to mention I had it on hand).
