I grow Butter Crunch lettuce and the first thing it does when it "bolts" is what you show here. The tips "melt" so to speak.

You can clip back the bad parts, but basically this puppy is bolting (going to start its way to making seeds). When mine do this, it off to the compost pile!

It happens.
