Has anyone successfully grown spearmint or peppermint hydroponically?

I tried it using NFT and the roots (rhizomes) basically rotted. I'm considering using drip, but thought I'd throw it out to the group before going down that road. I grow it only because I like the aroma the plants give off as they transpire and sometimes I cook with it.

If anyone has used drip, do the roots air prune or am I in for complete infestation of my return tubes and reservoir?
