Question about capillary action in seedling trays

Hi, I am attempting to bottom water my seedling trays in a NFT open gutter system, with the tray cells filled with peat moss. I originally placed the trays (w/ peat moss) in the NFT system to see if they would wick the water up over night but didn't have success.

My question is, do I need to soak the peat moss first to activate the capillary action? Any other suggestions? Thank you.

From my limited experience, I would say yes. Whenever I use peat moss I soak it first. It's a little slow to soak in water, but stays moist for a while and seems to be nicely loose for the roots to breathe. I've never used peat in my DWC or NFT systems but I'm relatively new to them anyways.
