Heirloom Watermelons.

I've ordered some heirlooom watermelon seeds;

Golden Midget
Black Seeded Ice Cream
White Sugar Lump
Takii Gem

I can't quite decide on the best way to grow them. I'm basically trying to decide between ebb and flow and a drip system.

The ebb and flow would consist of 10" net pots filled with hydroton, 5 gal bucket per plant. The drip system would be a mixture of perlite and vermiculite, 5 gal bucket per plant.

Any thoughts on this? I have had some success growing sugar babies in 5 gal containers filled with pro-mix (hand-watering). Leaning towards a system filled with medium, but I have never tried a drip system before.

Either way will work. Because they are essentially equivalent. Not surprisingly watermelons take up a lot of water and the drip system will be more forgiving than the ebb n flow.

I think Buckets of CoCo will be your best choice since it can hold more water.

You can maintain it more easily, but if you really want to to do Hydro I would go for an aeroponic system for watermelon because you will get better results.

Hope that helps and good luck!

So i decided on ebb and flow. I put the plants in the system today. Unfortunately I snapped a couple seedlings in half while fiddling with lights and what not. So time to plant a couple more.
