I don't think growing the sod would be the problem, having it adapt to field conditions after transplant might be.

Where are you finding material on hydro sod? I donÂt know if this helps but I found some info on fodder. Mist & run to waste systems are often used for hydro fodder although NFT systems are advertised. You could experiment by building your own system.
