Hydroponic / Soilless Flowers

Hi, I am thinking about doing some hydroponic flowers next year, especially for cut flowers. I am thinking of using lava rock in a big container. I don't mind occasional watering, so I won't setup any complicated automatic watering system. I am thinking about filling the container with 1" of nutrient, so it is like an automatic-watering system.

Do you think this will work? What are the things that I need to watch out for?

And the reason I am thinking about doing this is because the soil here is clay. I have to add a lot of amendment to improve it, and it might take a couple of years. I still need to do that for landscaping purposes on my garden beds, but for cut flowers, it seems easier to go hydroponics.

I have done some readings but most books deal with vegetables (and short ones like lettuce or spinach). If you know any book that deals with hydroponic flowers, your recommendation would be greatly appreciated too.
