Growing potatoes - some observations

I grew Yukon Gold, Norland Red, and a blue potato this year. They all did well, but the golds seem to grow the biggest. I left some in the soil too long and they started to rot. The reds seem to be content to stay in the soil. The blues are still maturing.

I grew Red Norland, Pontiac Red, Russet Burbank, Red Lasoda, and a blue variety. So far I have only dug up the Red Norland and I have been a bit disappointed. The yield this year was much lower than years past. They tasted just as good though! Hopefully it is just the Norlands that yield low this year. I added some organic fertilizer from Zamzows this year and I wonder if that caused the greens to grow too much and sacrificed root / tuber growth. I'll know more when I dig up the other varieties. I've never had the rot problem you speak of. Every spring I find a few tubers that I missed in the fall harvest and they always look good.

Yup. I think I had a little too much organic material in the soil for potatoes. They grew well, but I really did need to snatch them out of the ground when they ripened. Next year I'll just plant them in the clay soil without compost or other organic amendments.
