something is getting to my impatiens

When finding damage - the leaves are laying on ground, not succulent but appear 'tired' and they appear cut at ground level. Ground level stem is not mushy. I might try rooting these in water; last year I tried to salvage by inputting directly into garden soil but did not have any luck.

I have tried sprinking slug/snail bait around but still have problem. So far it's only on one plant but this spread last year and I ended up with only one plant. Trying not to have to resort to hanging the impatiens above ground or inputting into a pot. (using those methods also for same area). Any ideas will appreciated. Zone 7/8 Upper North/Eastern Texas.

Sounds like you may have some sort of mammal maybe mice or voles or something of the like. I know that these animals have done this sort of thing to other plants. Do you have cats? If this is what it is, cats Im sure will love to take care of the problem for you.

We are experiencing the EXACT same problem with our impatiens. This is the first time it's happened, and we have had successful gardens before. I have been told it's snails getting to them and to use mothballs around the edge of the garden to keep them out. We tried that bait too, in pellet form, and it didn't help at all. This is also the first time we haven't put down mulch. I'm thinking this is the key more than anything.
