Lighting height

Hello,

I just found this forum and just love it!

Now, my question:
This is my 1st attempt at starting impatiens from seed. They germinated well, and are now approximately from 1 to 2 inches tall. I have shop lights set up over them, but I'm not sure of the height of the lighting. I have seen where some are stating a height of 4 inches. Unfortunately, if I hang my lights that low all of my plants won't get the benefit of the lighting. If the lights are hung about a foot over the plants, what will the ill effects be as far as the plants growth? (I have about 300 impatien seedlings, and only two lights)

Thanks for any light (ha) anyone can shed on this!
Jackie

If you have the lights to high above the seedlings the results will be weak leggy plants.

My experience leads me to believe that you will be okay with one foot clearance between your lights and your plants. When they're germinating and in the youngest stage, they seem to need the light very close. If you have one to two inch plants, I think you'll be okay with the lights higher up.
