Ants in mulch?

Posted by jennscoob Ohio (My Page) on

I have tiny ants in my dyed dark brown mulch in my Impatiens garden. Will they harm the flowers? Should I do something to try to keep the ants out?
Thank You!

Ants won't do anything to your impatiens. You can put down ant traps if you want or just let them be

no they do not hurt the plants

BUT!!!! they could be carpenter ants or even worse termites.

I work at Home Depot and we found a carpenter ant nest in one on the bags of mulch.

Saturate the area with Malathion or a Spectracide product for ants

I'm not really sure why some people think ants are fine around plants?? Some ants farm plant pests like aphids and scale insects for the honeydew. I would get rid of them in the garden or containers.

get rid of them. either spray or drop bug killing granuals (like a Spectracide or Ortho) on them. Good riddance.
