Impatiens Quickly Dying after Mulch App

Diane Bilke

We live in the D/FW metroplex. We planted Impatiens about one month back, top dressed with compost, and they were settling in and growing quite nicely. This week we added hardwood mulch to the beds. Next morning, a section of the impatiens looked very stressed. I watered in the mulch heavily, but by the end of the the day, 90% of the impatiens were dead/dying and now our hydrangea plants are showing signs of stress.

Is this typical and what can be done to help? We've never had this happen after past applications of mulch.
