 o
species of Impatiens

Hi:

It would be helpful if people mentioned the species of Impatiens and not just the family--Impatiens

I know many of you do list the species--This is for those who don't.

I answered a question on Impatiens. It seems they were talking about Balsam and not what I know as Impatiens. The one referred to as simply Impatiens is Impatiens Walleriana. That's the one that is listed in seed catalogues as Impatiens.

Balsam is of the family Impatiens but the species Balsam and has some of the characteristics of Impatiens Wallerina, but is very different in growth, flower and seed pods. It is referred to as Balsam in most seed catalogues

HUH? Impatiens balsamina IS a species of Impatiens. "Impatiens" is the Genus, not the 'family'.

Did you even read what I wrote. Just exactly what is genus in simple terms--the family
Websters dictionary definition of genus.

Main Entry: ge·nus
Pronunciation: \ˈjç-nəs, ˈje-\
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural gen·era \ˈje-nə-rə\ also ge·nus·es
Etymology: Latin gener-, genus birth, race, kind — more at kin
Date: 1551
1: a class, kind, or group marked by common characteristics or by one common characteristic ; specifically : a category of biological classification ranking between the FAMILY and the SPECIES, comprising structurally or phylogenetically related species or an isolated species exhibiting unusual differentiation, and being designated by a Latin or latinized capitalized singular noun
2: a class of objects divided into several subordinate species

No one is disputing that Balsam is of the genus Impatiens. but there are vast differences between species. All I said was that it would be helpful if people identified the species and not just the genus.
