Yellow jackets!

Hi all, I'm a beginner gardener and have just planted some impatiens on my outdoor balcony rail. They're flowering beautifully, but recently I noticed several yellow jackets or wasps attracted to them and staying in the plants all day. Is this typical of impatiens? My neighbors below me have small children who play in their yard downstairs, so I'd rather not use any harmful chemicals in case they drip down. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Caroline, Try placing a new Bounce dryer sheet into the center of the plant. I've found that stuffing them into things/places where wasps like to next repels them, It may work to keep them away from the impatiens. Chaz |

| Bounce dryer sheets really work? I'm in the NYC area, have containers on my terrace full with thriving impatiens and pesky yellow jackets that are intent on hanging out. No sign of any aphids or honeydew, can't figure out what the attraction is? I want them gone. Deathly afraid of getting stung... allergic. |

Vervaine, They kept wasps from nesting in all sorts of places for me. I place a few around the yard in the patio area and for the most part they leave things alone. I am finding though that with certain plants there is just no keeping them away with out chemical use. They absolutely will not leave my passifloras alone, the buds secrete a nectar that the paper wasps love, they seem to be very protective of the plants! I'm allergic but not anaphalactic at this point, I"m sure that's on the way though. I try everything to keep the aggressive types away, traps, sprays, and bounce sheets! Try it, but I can't guarantee anything. I used to live in brooklyn and wish I new about this back then. |
