asking the experts because i am getting impatient with my impati

Hi web world I have a few Questions for you all re: my seasonal impatient garden. Two years ago I moved into this home and planted some Imp. (FOR SHORT). They were breathtaking big beautiful blooms and I was so proud. Last year I did all petunias good job but I decided to go back to imps. This time the plants are just so-so it is hard to get them to grow and flower. Seems they have buds but only flower once or twice. They are very small as well. I am watering and I have sprinkled fertelizer once. I do have some sunflowers about 3 feet behind them. Could they be taking Nutrients? This year I did not mulch due to lack of money could that help ? What am I doing wrong? Thank you all in advance for your response.

Yes Sunflowers take a lot of water and nutrients out of the ground and they could be robbing your impatients or it could be where you have them planted.

I'm curious--Just where do you have them planted? Sunflowers require full sun and Impatiens full shade or at least very little direct sunlight. With this hot summer--at least it is most places--they would be struggling to just survive in the sun. Maybe the year they did so well it was cooler with a lot of overcast days.

I have the exact same problem, I switched back from petunias to impatiens because they had done fine before. However, I think this summer is just so much hotter, they are not doing well.
