Root Rot?

| I have had a problem with plants for about 5 years around my deck. Mostly impatients, but this year dahlias. They break off and turn to mush at the soil line.
I have taken the plants to the nursery before and they tell me it looks like root rot. Replace the soil. So 2 years ago I dug it out and put in new topsoil. It is still happening.
I have other things growning there and doing fine, Black Eyed Susan and a sedum.
Any ideas? |

| The only time I had that happen was the first time I used Miracle gro bloom fertilizer and poured it into the center of the plant. They were mush in a few days. So now I only use Osmocote around them. I poke holes around them fill it up with Osmocote and water the plants. I haven't had anymore mushy plants. |

Aha.... Since my last application of Miracle Gro about 2 weeks ago, the impatiens blooms in one of the 3 pots are about 90% gone! I keep watering them and keep them out of the sun as best I can, but they are obviously not happy at all. The leaves are excellent but the blooms are so sad. In the other huge pot, the stems are sparse and long with nice blooms. I've pulled quite a few 'weak' stems out. They were so profuse earlier this summer but I don't know what is going on other than they didn't like this last dose of Miracle Gro. |
