Impatiens question

Underneath each bloom there is a thin "spire" growing down from beneath and in a shallow arc. Grows to a pointed tip.
Can anyone tell me what it is and what purpose it serves?
Many thanks,

| That is the spur. It contains nectar for the moths and butterflies that can reach down to drink it up. When it reached far enough into the flower, it rubs its head against the reproductive organs and fertilizes the female parts. |
