Drowning Impatiens?

I've planted my impatiens in the same place for 9 years and never had this...After blooming for a season,about til August 15th,they dropped all their leaves and the thick stalks looked like fat succulents.We have had much humidity and rain and the ground was saturated for weeks before my impatiens did this.Did their roots drown?I didn't check their leaves for the mildew because I just heard about it on this forum.

I just found this! Thanks for this also--our experience has been identical. I did check for mildew and think I see some evidence of it, though am not certain.

Can the roots rot?
Almost everyone in my area uses Impatiens as pond marginals. The ones in the pond have their roots submerged at all times. The ones in the ground I keep the soil very wet at all times.
