Southern Magnolias in Iowa?

Has anyone in Iowa been successful with the Southern Magnolia? I planted two small ones in Spring 05 and so far they are still doing alright.

Thought about it, never did it... I do have a virginiana 'Moonglow', for what that's worth. How much protection are you giving them, and do they keep any leaves through the winter? I've always figured just about the time a southern magnolia got big enough to bloom, we'd have one of those "cow-killer" winters, and it would have outgrown its protection, and drop dead. Not that that would necessarily keep me from planting one.

hawki,
Both have lost minimal leaves considering they went through that really cold December and -12. Both have some leaf burn, about 30% but they look good still. I'm hoping that if they make it through this winter no worse than they are now they will only gain hardiness. From what I've read, there are some people in Chicago that have had some sucess as well as northern Ohio. The only protection I've had is a good thick layer of mulch in a sort of sheltered site.

I went out and looked, and my M. virginiana has about 1/3 of its leaves still... it's not very protected, and I think our low here was 13 below.
