Renting a garden plot?

Posted by Sasayra 5 IA (My Page) on

There's an urban legend (grin) here in Des Moines that there are garden plots to be rented by those who don't have any (or don't have enough) of their own land available for gardening purposes. I have a decent in town lot, but it's all shade, and I really want to plant some veggies this spring/summer. Does anyone know if there are, in fact, rentable plots available here, and if so, who to contact?

Thanks!

Sara

Sara, I feel guilty. I live in rural Waterloo. My neighboring farm friend has all kinds of great land to plant on. I use about a 10th of this virgin land. I'm sure if you watch the newspaper this spring you might find something. Other wise, great brave and go to your nearest farmer and ask. They might have what you need or know someone.

You should feel guilty, Sanfan :-) Just kidding.

That's a great idea. Next time I'm out wandering I'll start paying more attention to those farms!

Sasayra, you might check with your county extension office. Some communities have "Community Gardens" sponsored by Extension. They are for people who want to garden but don't have land.

Each participant gets their own section in a large plot of land. I believe there is a minimal charge to participate. Also, I think those beds come with a water outlet so people don't have to haul water. I've seen several Community Gardens and the predominant crop is vegetables such as tomatoes. Sometimes the gardens are set up in public easements as this is the only available space big enough for a garden.

Good luck in finding one.

Another idea is to check with the recreation department in DM. In Cedar Rapids there are (or were, I'm assuming they are still there) community plots. I believe they were rented through the recreation department. The only bad news is that there is often a loooong waiting list to get a plot, and I think in CR you had to wait until someone gave theirs up.
