planting glads early

I'll be starting with new glads this season, and I want some in bloom for the first weekend of August, when my garden club has their annual show. I've never had glads bloom that early before. Because they'll be underground, do I dare plant them the first of May? Here in zone 4, near Fort Dodge, I don't consider us safe from frost until May 10 or later. Or, can I start them in peat pots indoors and then plant the pots 6" below the surface after May 10? I'm thinking that if I don't plant them as deep, they'll emerge earlier, but do I want them deeper to keep them stable when they grow? Thanks for your help. My success with glads has been mediocre so far.
