does anyone know where to get free or reasonably priced mulch in central IA? I'm in Ames and am looking for hay, wood chips, or anything to keep some weeds down in my garden.

I always use grass clippings for my mulch. If you aren't looking for a specific look and are just looking for weed control, you can't beat it. I don't mind the way it looks, either, but some people do. I push-mow my 1-acre yard at least a couple times a year specifically to get the grass clippings (my push-mower has a bagger, my rider does not). Put them down at least 4-6 inches thick and sit back and be lazy all summer!
