Any Zone 4 success w/ Cornus Kousa?

Posted by RandyW 4-NW Iowa (My Page) on

There are a few nurseries & web sites that indicate that Cornus Kousa may be hardy in zone 4 (most say zone 5.) Is there anyone who has such a tree in zone 4 that is surviving & doing well? If so, what variety, & does it require any special growing conditions?

Thanks,
Randy W.

RE: Any Zone 4 success w/ Cornus Kousa?

Hi Randy, we also live in zone 4 northwest Iowa and I would not recommend planting the Cornus Kousa in our area. All my gardening books show it in the lower Southern part of Iowa. Of course many gardeners have areas in their yard where it is warmer and more protected. We grew the soulangea magnolia for years but because the buds set on so early in the Spring, we had only two Springs when it bloomed for us so we eventually removed it. Good luck. Mary
