Onions, potatoes, etc.

Hello there!

I was checking out the Iowa State Extension office for information as when to plant spring veggies and saw that the beginning of April was when you could start. It still seems too cold with the lows dipping into the mid-20's outside but I had some cabbage and broccoli plants that HAD to go out because I started them way too early (live and learn) so they are out under plastic milk jugs.

Now I want to plant my onion sets, peas and radishes but should I hold off for another couple of weeks. Has anyone put them in yet? And where are the warm temps we had in early March?!

I don't know about *planting* them, but my onions from last year are coming up nicely already, so I suspect it's time. And same with radishes and peas -- I'm not doing any this year, but I've done them in the past; they're both very cold-hardy, and the peas need to go in early if you want to beat the summer heat.

Planting either today or tomorrow - will see if I get the tiller started :) Thanks for replying Karen - I like to see what other gardeners in the area are up to as I'm still getting used to IA.

Peas are germinating - but I had to move a little soil to check. Radishes are up, spinach is up, kohlrabi is up, dill is up, we had chives in our cottage cheese for Easter, beets are up, chard is up.

If you check the seed packages for the amount you have to plant, you can safely 'risk' some in March, and replant as needed in April. I'd rather plant them all and get a head start than wait and have leftover seed.

Just my 2¢.

We're in Washington, so may be farther south than some of you.

I'm just thrilled to see our weather forecast for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. :) Finally, some warmer weather. I want to start hardening off my brassicas, dill, and cumin. And I can't wait to see how the apple tree I planted last year and the fruit cocktail tree and berries I just planted do.
