Transplanting Russian Sage

Posted by iowagirl2006 (My Page) on

I have several Russian Sage plants that I would like to move. They have been in the same spot for about 3 - 5 years.

Is now a good time to move them, or should I wait a bit? Can I divide these while I am transplanting?

I am in Nortwest Iowa - Carroll County. Zone 4-5

Thanks for your input.

Now is a great time to move them and divide them. I have gotten ten plants out of a single plant before when I dug it up. Cut them back before you do and make sure you get a good root system. I had good luck transplanting them until about the end of June if the weather is not too hot and I keep them watered. When I cut them back, I usually take the cuttings and stick them in the ground. More than half of them take root if you make sure they don't get too dry, and you'll have more plants for next year too.

Thanks for the info Mike!

Now - where to put them? LOL I will need to find them a new home before I dig. I am terrible at that. I always seem to pick the wrong spot - or plant everything in a row.
