Mulch or ground cover or grass??

Hi.

I've had a dilemma for a few years about what to plant or place around the perimeter of my rural home.

It's difficult to mow because it is around the perimeter of the house and there's not much space in some areas due to a close-by detached garage and trees.

Also, 3 of the 4 sides are shaded by either the garage or oak and hickory trees. I haven't had much success growing grass there but it could be the wrong kind of grass. I don't recall what I've tried to grow--the area has been bare for about 4 years now.

I'd be willing to try to mow it if I could get grass to grow in the very shady areas.

Should I try a LOW-GROWING ground covers or some type of mulch instead of grass?

I was going to use mulch until I heard that it can increase the likelihood of termites entering the house.

Recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks.
