growing flowering cherries and japanese maples

Hey guys. I have a couple of trees I'd like to try this spring, but am unsure if they'll be able to survive our winters. I'm located just south of cedar rapids in what is considered zone 5a. The trees in question are flowering cherry trees - yoshino and kwanzan, and a japanese bloodgood maple tree. All three are listed as appropriate for zone 5, but since I am just barely in zone 5 I'm looking for other success stories before wasting my time and money with them. Let me know what you think; thanks.

I'm just south of you in I.C.; you should have no trouble at all with Bloodgood, though a little winter wind protection (and protection of the trunk from direct sun in the winter) wouldn't hurt. I grew both BG and Kwanzan cherry in Cedar Falls, but late spring freezes as often as not trashed the flowers on Kwanzan.

I'm in Mount Vernon and I planted two Japanese Maples back in September. An "Emperor I" and another generic one have both made it through the winter and late frost. Both of mine are slightly protected from the winter winds by my privacy fence in the back yard.
