Hi,
I am starting unk type Lilac and unk type Hydrangea from root given to me. What should I expect to see as far as maturity of these in Iowa weather, very heavy clay soil?

Thanks for any opinions shared =)

RE: What to expect of Lilac and Hydrangea?

On my nightly 2 mile walk tonight I passed a neighbor's house who has a lilac hedge on the north side of their house. They are on a corner lot and the hedge screens the side street. I usually vary my route each night...but I've been by this hedge the past 4 evenings.

It's all the same variety(no I don't know what it is) It's been in full bloom this week and the fragrance tonight was really sweet.

The hedge is about 75 feet long and they keep it trimmed to about 60 inches high.

There are lilacs blooming all over Iowa falls this week...I think they are easy to grow with a little bit of TLC

Hi Stacy!
How are your roots doing by now? They will both grow at about the same rate. You will see maybe a foot of growth the first year, a little more the following year. By the third year they will start to grow faster and may bloom. (I did get a bloom on a 3'lilac this year.)It takes time but, it's fun watching them grow.
