Nurseries around Des Moines?

Posted by sasayra 5 IA (My Page) on

One day my best friend (another garden addict) and I were having lunch at our favorite restaurant and our favorite server mentioned a few places we'd never heard of (and now can't remember!). We realized that there are places we've never discovered. So we're on a mission to visit as many nurseries as we can within an hour's drive of town.

But first we have to find them!

I know Flying Frog Hosta Farm, and I read about the Quilted Garden last night. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

Sara

WHO Radio gardeners Mohammad and Eileen rave about Harvey Floral in Adel, IA. It's about 90 miles from where I live so...I haven't been there but, it's on my list.

Harveys is AWESOME !!!! THey have over 14 greenhouses on the property to walk thru- incredible seleciton- about 30 miles west of Des Moines. The Flying Frog has a booth at the Downtown Farmers Market- they have over 600 hosta varieties on their farm !! You'll have to check them out. There is also Groth's Gardens which is near Winterest and Howell's which is in Cumming. Here are some of the websites:

Garden Town USA is worth the trip to Davenport, Iowa. Take I-80 to I-280.

Try Piney Ridge at 6355 NW 51 Street in Des Moines. Also Lucille's (phone 967-3535) in Bondurant just past the hazardous waste recycling center is an interesting local place for plants.

I really like Heirloom Gardens...it's out in the same vicinity as Heards. I'm sorry, but I can't give you any better directions than that, as I'm from NW Iowa. My hubby knows how to find it, but he's snoring at the moment. :-)
