Q. I received a beautiful pot of tulips for my Birthday in late April and would like to put the bulbs in the ground outside the house. They are finished blooming but should I wait 'till Fall?

A. Yes, your tulips can be planted outside and yes, fall is the time to transplant them. In the meantime, the pot of tulips should be kept growing in adequate light, watered and fertilized with a liquid fertilizer. During this period, the nutrients are taken from the foliage and stored in the bulb for next yearÂs bloom. Depending on environmental circumstances, you may wish to keep the pot in the house, set it outside, or sink the pot into the soil.
After the foliage dies back, remove it from the bulbs, and remove as much soil as possible. Avoid removing the "skin" or dried layer surrounding each bulb. Store in a cool location (or refrigerator) until fall planting (late September or October).
Planting depth is approximately three times the diameter of the bulb (e.g., 8" deep for large bulbs). Mix a high phosphate fertilizer (e.g., bone meal) into the soil. Best display is achieved through group planting. Mulch to maintain a more constant soil temperature and preserve moisture.
One note of caution - bulbs that have been forced need a recovery period. DonÂt be too disappointed with the blooms next year. Hyacinths and Daffodils survive better than tulips. But if I were you, I would sink the pot into a flowerbed, nurture the foliage until it has finished its useful life, then remove the bulbs, place them in a cool environment then plant in the fall.
