Garden Safari?

O.K.,here's my question: why is the last weekend in June the big weekend for garden walks? More often than not,it's the hottest weekend of the Summer; my wife just barely humors me by going on the Iowa City Green walk, and only once have we actually gone to all the gardens, due to the heat. Also, to me that particular weekend is one of the "deadest" weekends in the garden for spectacular bloom. The roses have just turned to mush in the heat, but the daylilies and most of the other high Summer perennials haven't cranked up yet; give me a tour in late May when the azaleas are all in bloom and the whole garden is perfumed, or the first weekend of June when the old-fashioned roses are so weighted down with flowers that all the branches are touching the ground. On the last weekend of June the garden is mostly perfumed with fungicide.

After posting the above, I discovered the Iowa City Green garden walk is on July 11th this year; better for flowers but even worse for heat; I think statistically that's actually the hottest weekend of the year. Give me a Spring tour anytime. Don |

| I think it's because so many flowers are at their peak. My lilies are always spectacular at the end of June. Unfortunately, the heat and the bugs are peaking too! Cricket |
