Summer Bulb Questions

Posted by katiejohnson Iowa (My Page) on

Hi everyone,

I recently planted some summer bulbs I purchased from a fundraiser: gladiolus, Oriental lilies, sparaxis, blazing star liatris, and peacock orchids. I didn't get them until May 20th or so, so I got them in the ground a little later than I would have liked. The glads, lilies, and orchids are coming up beautifully, but the liatris and sparaxis have yet to pop out of the ground. Does anyone know if this is common? Also, my husband accidently recycled the flyer that came with the bulbs, and I don't remember which ones I have to pull out of the ground to store before winter. Any advice?

Thanks in advance!
Katie, Cedar Rapids

RE: Summer Bulb Questions

Hi Katie,

Oriental lilies and blazing star are winter hardy. Glads are not although I have had a few come back in very mild winters. Peacock orchids I don't know.

I got my new oriental lilies in late and they came up but are stunted little things. They have buds but I am thinking of picking the buds off to make the plants concentrate on root/bulb development for next year. They were cheap ones I got at Menards so we'll see.

Good luck with yours!

Maria
