Cherry Trees

Posted by lovecherries Central-Eastern Iowa (My Page) on

I was wondering if anyone knows of a nursery nearby, where I can buy a bing cherry tree. Also, does anyone know if sweet cherries grow well in Iowa? I was thinking of buying a Tartarian Black Cherry tree and a Bing Cherry tree for my backyard. Will they grow in Iowa and produce good fruits?
Thank you for any advice.

RE: Cherry Trees

I live in Iowa Falls, 4 miles north of US 20 and 15 miles east of I-35.

My neighbor has a bing cherry tree on the north side of his house, next to the street on the boulevard. It's a mature tree and he really babies it.

He pruned it late this winter (about 20%) and sprays it in the spring.

As I write this he has a huge bird net over the entire tree staked to the ground. It's fun to watch them pick the fruit inside that net.(grin) The tree is loaded with fruit.

He and his wife have been harvesting early each morning this week. The tree seems to produce well year after year.

I have heard anecdotally that many cherry trees and apple trees south of I-80 were hurt by the cold snap in late April and have not borne much fruit this year. My neighbor's tree obviously was not hurt by the cold this year as it was not budding out when the cold hit.
