feed that the squirrels will not touch

I was having trouble with the squirrels eating all the bird feed out of the feeders. At one time I counted 7 squirrels on and below the feeder. I had read that they do not like Safflower so I bought some and it works!!! I have a feeder for them that has corn and sunflowers so they are not neglected. I have attracted more birds with the safflower. I have had a Rose Breasted Grosbeak, lots of purple finches and I finally got my Cardinals back. The sparrows arent very interested it it so it lasts alot longer. I also have a suet cake that the Wood Peckers and Cat Birds like. I had a wren but I'm not sure if it was eating the sunflowers or safflower. I was lucky enough one day to spot what I think was a red start in the tree,it is small, black and orange and very fast. Ya gotta love em! They are so fun to watch.

Great tip. Do you have any suggestions to keep the deer from munching plants? Many of my hostas now look like yuccas because the leaves are totally gone. Certain ones they won't touch, though. They seem to NOT like the blue ones, the minis or the variegated ones.

My boss uses electric fence(it works) also try searching deer resistant plants there are alot of them. I have 3 dogs so we don't have that problem

We don't have any problem with deer in our yard, but I have read if you go to your local salon and get some hair and put it around your plants the human smell will keep them away. Also lay down chicken wire, they don't like to walk on it. Here are some websites to check out www.deerout.com www.liquidfence.com www.plantskydd.com Hope this helps! |

Thanks for the tips. We have two dogs, but they're not outside all the time. Every night they go chasing after something in the dark, so my problem might even be worse without them. We have over an acre, so electric fence doesn't fit the budget. I have planted some deer resistant plants and they're fine. It's partly my own laziness--I could do more proactive things, like the hair & stuff. I must admit that my yard and flowerbeds are badly neglected this year due to all the rains which produced a surplus of mosquitoes in our area. I think I'm seeing Mother Nature's law of supply & demand: surplus of mosquitoes = surplus of garter snakes. Ack! Some days I just can't work up the courage (and the clothing & the repellent) to face the bounty of insects and reptiles. Maybe all this rain/standing water has caused the deer to go to areas where they normally wouldn't.
