Whats up with all the plants left in the garden centers?

Is it just me or is there a very large amount of plants still left in the garden center? They are looking kind of tattered too. Linda

First of all --they look tattered because greenhouses plan for their plants to look great approx 4/15. So now they have been in their pots --over-crowded --for 8 weeks too many. And most greenhouses can't afford the staff to cut back and turn the plants so they will look good.

I have seen some awful annuals in the last week. I swear that no one waters on the weekends!

I haven't heard much --but I didn't notice the huge crowds in May. Maybe the rains kept customers away but with the over-stock that I have seen --- the greenhouse business was not good this year. I have also noticed bigger sales earlier this year.

I think the rain every weekend has slowed people down. Plants are looking pretty sad sitting in pots this long and I haven't noticed many sales yet. Nobody's going to buy those sad little plants the way they look now unless they go on sale.

To be honest, I wasn't able to find what I was looking for locally so I had to order out of state. I asked at several places in IC and they couldn't even order the groundcover I wanted. I had to order from a source out of state and the nursery there was so helpful and friendly that I overspent my budget by a long ways.

Everbody go out and dig a new bed so we can all support our local greenhouses!

Coral Fruit Market has everything, and I mean everything at 50% off... I got 4 tree peony, one regular peony, a Lord Baltimore hibiscus... I'll be going back soon..

Coral Fruit Market has an excellent variety of hostas still on hand, but be prepared for terribly overcrowded and root bound plants. I plan to divide all the ones I got into much smaller divisions, and they'll look pretty miserable this year, but by next year they'll perk up. Be sure to spread the roots out well when you plant them. They are going to auction everything that's left over on August 3rd. There won't be any hostas left ;-) but if you need large terra cotta planters it might be a good opportunity to pick them up for a reasonable price.

Just to put my two cents in. I work at a garden center in SE Iowa. In my humble opinion it is one of the best!! We take great pride in the way our garden center still looks. Anyway, all the rain and bad weather put alot of people behind. I can't tell you the number of people that have said "I haven't even started planting!" That I have heard this year. Also I think people have been very busy and time just seems to be going faster and faster!!

Ok --Tam88 --spill the beans ---Where do you work? I'm in need of a road trip and SE Iowa is one of my favorite jaunts!

I am heading south this weekend, as my sister lives in Williamsburg, and Monday is her birthday. My question is, where is the Coral Fruit Market located?

The Coral Fruit Market is on Hwy 6 in Coralville, just south of the Coral Ridge Mall.
Coming from Williamsburg on I80, get off I80 at Exit 240 and turn right on to HWY 965 and then at the T intersection of 965 and Hwy 6 turn left and it's a couple stop lights down from that intersection (going east). I haven't been there for a couple of weeks, so I don't know what they have left..
