Planting sweet potatoes in garden

Ok.....I know that here in Iowa sweet potatoes tend not to do so well. I have tried before, with them producing enough for a rather large family gathering with a few left over. Only 6 plants. Any words of wisdom out there for this silly gal?? I am trying it again! They are Beauregard (spelling? ) and they mature in 90 days. I know that the ground needs to be warm before you plant, so I figured now is the time.

Would love to hear from anyone else challenging the climate here in Iowa!!!

I've never grown the food-type sweet potato, but my neighbor does and brings us 5 gallon buckets full of huge potatoes in the fall.

Well, that is encouraging! I got them in today. Only 8 plants, but this is an experiment! hehe!
If you hear any words of wisdom from these folks, I would appreciate it if you passed it on.

Thanks

I've had varying degrees of success, usually depending on the weather, so it's like any other crop. Water seems to be the important ingredient as the tubers develop - August and Sept. - our dryer season. The best crops came from the wettest years. One crop was awful, and that was a dry year.

Good luck!
