Hey Everyone!

I'm new to Garden Web and would like to find other Gardeners in SW Iowa for "Gardening Friendship" and/or plant swap.

I live 40 miles south of Council Bluffs/Omaha area.

Denise

I live in
Kansas but visit the Omaha area several times a year. I would be interested in a "gardening buddy" and/or plant swap. Email me if you would like.

Hi Denise,
I live in CB. I would be interested in "gardening friends" or plant swap. The same goes for you Brendak.

Diane and Denise...I also live in Council Bluffs. South East just a ways past the ISD. I'm in sort of country..Have room for large garden but just have a very small one.

Hubby had a stroke this March...so I'm doing everything smaller..because I have to do it on my own.

Well there ARE some SW Gardeners here! LOL Maybe we should set up a swap or something (we could just meet for coffee some place in Council Bluffs). Let me know if your interested!

Wow! I've finally visited somewhere on the internet where there are people from my area! Sounds like you live about 10 miles or so from me, Denise! I live close enough to the Air Force base to get the dubious honor of hearing planes day in and day out :-)

Hey Kristeen!

I used to live in Bellevue! Only 1 block from the back gate to the base.

Would you be interested in a fall swap?

Oh Denise, compared to some of the gardens that the members here have, I have nothing! I'm not entirely sure what you would call my type of gardens...rustic farm yard?? Most of the flowers here are ones that were planted by the family that lived here before me for 80 some odd years, and they seemed to have had a paticular love of phlox, purple coneflowers and black eyed susans. I bet I literally have hundreds of these three plants! Great plants, but over the last 5 years or so I've been slowly trying to establish some other types (I've developed a love for larkspur and hollyhocks). I think they had so many of those because they will grow under black walnuts, and there are two of those. I just haven't found the heart to rip some of them out yet, but I am going to try and make myself sometime this summer, because it looks like a jungle out there! Oh, and leave it to me-before I knew any better, I planted some crown vetch on a hillside a few years back. Wow. People are not joking about the things they say about that one! It was easier ripping out poison ivy with my bare hands.

Anyway, thanks for the offer, but I really don't have anything really worth trading :-( I just thought it was really cool that there were a few people here that were near to me! Usually when I say I'm from Iowa, at the most, I get a 'I once drove through there.' or a 'aren't you bored a lot?' LOL ;-) Thanks for responding-it was nice to meet you!

Kristeen!

I love phlox and have none! See, you do have something to swap! LOL It doesn't matter what you have or don't have, I just want to get together with others from the area.

Kristen, don't let growing things under black-walnut trees scare you off. I grow pretty much anything I want under black walnuts, except tomatoes.:) Peony, poppy, pulmiaria, hosta, ligularia, tulips, daffodils, iris, lily, daylily, etc....

'I love phlox and have none!'

You're kidding me! I thought everyone around here had those-LOL! Well, if you want phlox, you have met the right person. The majority of the ones I have came from seeds from the originals, so they're the lavender color, but I do have some prettier colors. Then too, some really like the lavender ones, too. I got your email-I'll respond as soon as possible-two sons and a 4 month old daughter keep me offline a lot ;-)

I have some of the others you mentioned, Diann. In fact, some of the stuff I've heard will lay down and die under walnuts, I've planted there (or were already there) and they're fine. I think most things only die because one thinks they will-LOL :-) I remember hearing columbine would never make it, but they're literally growing out of the base of the trees (told you it was a neglected garden ;-))! I didn't know poppies would though. And I'm not restricted to just there anyway-there are more big gardens that I started putting in on the other side of the house on what I refer to as 'the devil's knoll', because I really think that hillside was trying to kill me when I was clearing it :-( Definitely one of those moments where I was glad I lived in the middle of nowhere with no one to see me.
