| Welcome Home! I'd say it's too late for onions if you want the bulbs for use later. They form the bulbs as the amount of daylight wanes, and we're already in that stage. If you just want green onions, you can try it, but you may have to start with seed. They'll need plenty of water and some shade in the hottest part of the day, like planting them on the north side of a taller plant. It's too late for potatoes, I think, but a fine time for corn, beans, and even the squash family. I usually plant some cooler weather crops in early August - sometimes they're fine and sometimes it's a waste of seed - depends on the weather. Good luck! |

| I'd question whether corn would make it, too. I'm in SE Nebraska, raised in Iowa. I have in past years planted a very late planting of corn the end of June, which puts it maturing mid-September. I've never gotten any corn that was any good from that planting, and in fact this year I decided to plant more corn in my other plantings and forget the late one. The few nubbins I got from the very late planting were so riddled with worms (both earworm and corn borer) that there was barely a few bites per tiny little ear. If you do plant some, be sure to spray it! |
