Jack Frost Coming - What to Cover?

Well, it's that time of year again. It's October and a cold front is coming down from Canada. It's snowing in MT and ND as I write this.

And frost may be here in central Iowa in 24 to 48 hours...

Every year I tell myself ... "I'm not going to cover my pots and beds of impatiens. I'll just let them go." Then later after watching the TV weather...(11PM) I'm outside hauling pots into the garage and putting old sheets on the flower beds.

The trouble is... often they freeze anyway.

Will you be covering plants tonight? Or just letting them go?

Pete in I.F.

No covering...spent about 3 hrs this morning hauling stuff into the greenhouse :P

But...I personally wouldn't bother covering bedding plants. Even if you get them through the next few days, the next frost is just around the corner...unfortunately...

I just let nature take it's course. I love Fall - it's my favorite time of year. When frost comes it's time to put the gardens to bed for the winter. The pots on my porch usually outlast everything else because they're somewhat protected. I leave the things that have seed heads for the birds to eat and I'm putting my feeders out for winter birds.

I didn't do a very good job with my gardens this year. I was discouraged because of the draught. I'm looking forward to next year. I plan to spend the winter rethinking garden beds and making new plans for them.

I brought in my two Viburnums that are still waiting in pots, but everything else must fend for itself. I really hope nothing gets damaged-I am NOT ready to say goodbye to my flowers yet!
