Gardening Gift Ideas

Barely a creature is stirring on this forum, so it must be almost time to talk about gardening instead of do it.

What are some of the best gardening gifts you have ever received? or have ever wanted to receive? or have ever given? I'm thinking of reading material like books or magazines, tools or equipment, plants, seeds, or decorative items - anything.

I'll start. My favorite has been the snap-on hose connectors, and I'm always glum when they get gritty and stop working. With a garden that spreads all the way around the house, it's nice to be able to move a hose or sprayer a lot of effort.

Anybody else have a favorite?

Just came in from putting burlap and anti-dessicant on my "babies" and thought I'd check in. You're right, it's really quiet around here.

My absolute favorite gift was a pair of bionic gardening gloves. My daughter got me some and I love them! Although I didn't get the subscription to 'Fine Gardening' that I asked Santa for last year, I'm going to ask again this year.

Have a few books on my wish list. The Hosta Handbook by Mark Zilas.
Broke my shovel this past week, thank goodness the work is done so that goes on the list of hopefulls.
What/were can I find those Bionic Gardening Gloves? Bought a nice leather pair this year and they lasted about 2 weeks and started to rip.

I like the Baer's Agriculural Almanac & Garden Guide that has been published for 181 years.

It's $5.50 from John Baer & Sons.

I'm hoping for a Rodale Press book about shade gardening I saw at the Library. It looked wonderful! I wrote down all the details for my husband but I can only cross my fingers! LOL

At the garden center clearance I bought several of the watering wands for kids, the ones that are brightly colored. Also bought some better quality hand tools and garden belts as gifts at the same clearance event.

The problem with garden gift-giving is that the garden stuff is off the shelves by the time it is time to Christmas shop. And, it is too early to order seeds from catalogues to give as gifts. Grrr!

Also bought a couple of plastic bird baths that clip on to deck raillings. Got them at Farm and Fleet just recently. They seem quite durable and, most importantly, are light-weight for shipping.

Last year DH bought me a pair of Fiskars pruners - love them! In the past he has also gotten me gardening gloves and gift certificates to my favorite nurseries, and bird feeders.

Paws, the Bionic gloves can be found at the link below. However, you might want to google it to compare prices as they are available on a number of different sites.

Rhoda, I agree 100%!

2 great gardening gifts that I just received and LOVE!!!! - Janet Macunovich and practicalgardeninginstitute.com have a new book and poster set out called 8 Months of Color. The photos are delicious and are making me long for spring! The set is great and includes a compilation of plants (perennials, bulbs, trees, vines and shrubs) by height and week of peak color broken down by hardiness zones. Probably just as exciting as the book is the fact that my son and daughter-in-law also gave a subscription to www.practicalgardeninginstitute.com and I've been drooling over the forums. I'm able to take photos of problem plants and upload them to the forums to get advice from other master gardeners - it's incredible.
