Asian Lady Beetle

For those who posted threads asking how to get rid of Asian Lady Beetles, take a look at the link below from the Ohio State University. I've had to deal with the little buggers too and I hate them, especially since they bite! The kids are afraid of them, and since they look a lot like the non-biting Ladybird beetles, the kids are afraid of anything that resembles them. I've had to fish them out of my drinks on fall days, vacuum them from the windows and smash them in the yard when I see them. I've even had them crawl into bed with me! Very unsettling!

RE: Asian Lady Beetle

They all look like lady bugs to me.

Next time someone thinks they got bit by a lady bug, before you swat the thing to oblivion, get out the magnifying glass and look to see if you have a few orange eggs in the spot where you think you've been bitten. I remember as a kid that the "bites" seemed to accompany the egg laying. I'm wondering if the eggs might carry an acid that burns the skin on contact.

Any insectologists around who can answer that?

Ohio Green Thumb - EXCELLENT website. They'll be getting a report from me this year. Thanks for the link.

Ohio Green Thumb, it looks like that link no longer points anywhere. Can you repost a good link please?

New Ohio State web site for Asian Lady Beetle

The new web site is here. This is basically a "home page" with a variety of useful and not-so-useful links (for example you can find videos of beetles swarming, mating, and biting a human hand).

RE: Asian Lady Beetle or ladybug?

How does one tell the difference between benefical ladybugs & asian bugs (which can destroy plants)?

RE: Asian Lady Beetle

The only Asian Ladybug or beetle that I know of is not a plant eater but a predator insect like other lady beetles. It becomes a pest when it decides to congregate in large masses to overwinter in our homes. What else might you be thinking of?
