plants for beneficials

Please help, as I am new to using plants and beneficial insects to control vegetable garden pests. I was going to plant a herb garden in the middle of my vegetable garden. I plan to use lavender, thyme, german chamolmile, dill, and some basil. I was going to border the garden with marigolds as well. Introduce lady beetles and green lacewings. Am I on the right track.

Thanks.

RE: plants for beneficials

I have my doubts that introducing ladybugs will be worth the investment. However, if you grow a variety of plants, including flowering ones, you should attract a wide variety of beneficial insects. It is not helpful to border your garden with marigolds, but would be nice to interplant them with some other flowering plants.

Most importantly, do not use chemical pesticides of any kind. Observe your garden often so that you can catch infestations before they get the upperhand. And learn as much as you can about the huge assortment of large and tiny beneficals that may take up residence in your garden. Invest in a good insect field guide to help you get started in 'bugology'!

Here is a link that might be useful: Attracting benefical insects

The proper term for the study of insects is entomology
