What is this? (X-Posted in Butterfly Forum)

Hi I have these things on my variegated dogwood. I'm thinking they're probably wasps, but before i get out the hairspray and lighter, I wanted to see if anyone could confirm. I wouldn't want to kill off any beneficial insects or butterflies. Thanks for looking! :)

Saw that it was already answered over there in the butterfly forum...

It's a mantid egg case! Congratulations--you're about to be the proud parent of hundreds of little praying mantises!

Yikes, I think of them as primary butterfly and bee catchers! I evacuate them whenever I find them in my garden. They never stay put in the veggie garden if I move them.

Perhaps your brood will turn out to be better behaved.

Yes thank you, I'm so excited to have them. I love butterflies but I *need* the mantises to keep some of the pests in check. I may try moving some to the vegetable garden and see if they'll stay.
