Has anyone actually purchased one of these? I'm thinking about getting one for my mother who absolutely hates japanese beetles. I did a search to buy one, prices are from 19.99 to 59.99 for the same one!!

If you have the money to throw away on those types of things and use it in a way that does not also vacuum up beneficial insects this would probably be better for the environment than some of the poisons people use.

october17, plenty of people use them with great success. I've not used one myself, preferring my fine-tuned hand picking technique, but these gadgets are much recommended.

Haven't been able to try out the vacuum yet, no Japanese beetles around so far!! Will post when we try it out.

Your real vaccuum will work just fine as well...just use the attachment or get a hand held like a dirt devil. Sucks them up but doesn't always kill them...the little buggers are good and faking it. They will lie on their backs for a very long time and then all of a sudden get flipped over and keep on grossing people out...

The vacuum didn't work that great. It didn't have enough suction, I had to tilt it so that the beetles would fall into the tube. It did have a trap door so that the suction did pull them through so they couldn't get out if I didn't empty it right away. We had the beetles pretty bad on the cannas. Going back to plan A - only grow what they don't like!

I used my full size vac in my garden last year; it's a rainbow with water capture. It worked beautifully, and the neighbors seemed to enjoy it too. good luck!
