I have always used Roundup - but have heard several people mention CrossBow and say it is better.

Thoughts/opinions?

Both work as systemic herbicides. Crossbow is a tad better on woodies.

thanks....do you think Crossbow would work better on grass (trying to get rid of my lawn - and turn it into flower beds) - offered the grass on free cycle and no one wants it...

No, it won't work better.

Crossbow will not control grass. It is selective for broadleaf plants only.

Sorry to hijack -- will Crossbow work on English Ivy?

 o
RE: RoundUp or 'Crossbow'

Yes, but English Ivy often requires multiple treatments. :(

It will work, as will glyphosate based products, but additional surfactant is required to penetrate the thick cuticle of the ivy leaves.

Much difference on the residual effect too. None for Roundup; Up to 5 years for Crossbow.

You can't get rid of a lawn with Roundup or any other broad leaf herbicide. Have you considered rototilling? I got rid of my small lawn with a spade, claw and garden rake. It took a while but I did it in stages. I've heard that corn gluten applied to the soil keep grass from sprouting but it doesn't kill already sprouted grass. I just started to use corn gluten in my flower beds but it hasn't done much so far, I'm still battling crabgrass.

Roundup is not a selective, or broadleaf herbicide. It is a non-selective herbicide that will affect both grasses and broadleaf plants. One way to renovate a lawn when little desirable turf is left is to spray with Roundup which will kill the existing grass and weeds, and start over.

Corn gluten meal applied in high enough quantity and in the right conditions will suppress seed germination for about 4-5 weeks, although some weed species are not well controlled. Existing plants, including those below the surface, are not affected by CGM.
