The Mother of the American Nation?

George Washington is generally regarded as the 'Father of the American Nation' but there seems to be no corresponding agreement as to who is the 'Mother of the American Nation'.

I'd humbly like to nominate Rachael Carson, author of 'Silent Spring' who was born 100 years ago today.

My knowledge is more rounded because her book was required reading during an important segment of my formal education. We followed, from afar, the controversy over her book and vitriol against her. Looking back to that time, it must have been my first encounter with a distressing aspect of every day life- 'it does not have to be true; it just needs to be said'.

Related to the same subject, The Father of Taxonomy, Carl Linnaeus was born on May, 23rd. 300 years ago.

Ladies and Gentlemen, a toast to these great persons!
