leaf damage to beans and tomatoes

About a week ago portions of the leaves on my beans and tomatoes began to turn dark brown or grey and die. There is evidence on the underside of the leaves of some critter stripping the bottom layer of the leaves clean away. But I don't see any kind of insect. Spraying with Selecta seems to be helping, but what is it?
