Ground nesting bees

Some ground nesting bees(?) have taken over half of my rose beds. The holes are approximately 1/4 - 3/8 inch in diameter, and I have only seen single bees leave the holes and then return (I may be wrong on numbers of insects to holes - lack of observation time! There are 47 of the holes in roughly figured, 48 square feet of space. The bees are the normal black/yellow - no I haven't seen the faces/eyes yet (I need to bring my reading glasses out to the garden more often!).

Are these good guys or bad guys or possible bad guys, I know I haven't given you much to go on; but I don't want to zap them with permethrin if they are basically harmless (worse still, they may be beneficials, that I don't want to zap)!

I don't think they are yellowjackets; and they are too small (1/2" length) to be hornets.

RE: Ground nesting bees

Other than these are bees that nest in the ground I have no idea what they are.

You ask if they are good or bad. I ask, how do you define good and bad ;-) LOL

Can you garden in the area without the bees getting agitated? If so, then so far they are good. If they come out to attack you then they are bad ;-)

After this you have to observe to see what they do. If they feed on anything you value they are bad. If they feed on things you do not value they are good.

Sorry I can't be of more help. I don't know all the various bugs that are around. I can't remember much so I just divide bugs into 3 groups. Those I know are bad, those I know are good and 'the rest'.

Anything that eats what I want to eat is bad. Anything that uglys that which I want beautiful is bad. Anything that buzzes around me as I mind my own business is bad. Anything that feeds off my blood is bad. Anything which carries disease is bad.

Everything else (most of the bugs) is unknown and remains there until it pisses me off in some way in which case it is bad or until it amuses me in some way in which case it is good.

Sometimes there are bugs which are bad that amuse me and I simply get confused. ;-)

Sorry I can't bee (pun!) of more help.

Solitary nesting bees such as you have are extremely docile. They don't attack anyone.

They are beneficial because they are pollinators.
